Spring has sprung and that means the Cherry Blossoms in Washington, D.C. are starting to bloom! Millions flock to our Nation’s capital each year to witness the stunning array of soft pink colors lining the Tidal Basin. Even though the Cherry Blossom Festival takes place for about a month, there is a peak bloom date. So when and where can you spot these spectacular trees full of color?
When
This year the National Cherry Blossom Festival starts on March 20th and runs through April 14th. During this time it’s estimated that more than 1.5 million will come to D.C. to enjoy many different events and of course, the blossoms! Some of the most popular events throughout the month include the Blossom Kite Festival, the parade, and the Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival.
The best time to view the cherry blossoms in full bloom is during “peak bloom”. According to the National Park Service “peak bloom” is defined as the day when “70% of the blossoms of Yoshino cherry trees that surround the Tidal Basin are open.” This year the start of peak bloom is on April 5th. Sightseers can expect the peak to last about 14 days, but, there are several factors that can reduce this time frame; this includes wind, rain, frost, and high temperatures.
Where
With millions coming to Washington, D.C. for this national event, it’s important to pin down some good spots to take in the blossoms. It’s suggested that the best time of day to view the trees (with less crowds) is in the early morning or evening. Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that weekends will draw larger crowds as well. Here are a few places to see the Cherry Blossoms in full action:
The Tidal Basin: This area is perfect for viewing the cherry blossoms because the entire basin is covered in them! Along the northeast bank you’ll be able to take great pictures. For an amazing experience, try walking the Potomac basin from MLK to FDR to Jefferson at dawn or dusk.
The National Mall: Enjoy the trees while you explore the various museums and historic monuments. Remember to plan accordingly, as this is a popular spot for viewing.
East Potomac Park: If you want to avoid crowds, this spot is perfect. Take a leisurely walk along the river and enjoy the sights and smells the blossoms offer.
No matter where you choose to view the cherry blossoms, you’ll be in for a great treat!
