So, your child is going on their school’s annual trip to Washington D.C. and it’s leaving in just a few days, but you haven’t packed a thing. Take a deep breath, don’t panic and continue reading so you can pack correctly for the school trip! While every travel venture has different needs for attire, keep in mind the amount of travel days and pack accordingly. Below are a few important do’s and don’ts to consider when packing.
Do consult the Green Light packing list when packing your bag. The list will be distributed by your trip leader and includes space for weather forecasts, quantity of each item packed and number of travel days. Keep this list inside the suitcase so that your child can account for all items throughout the trip. Inventory management may take some practice!
Do collaborate with your child when packing. This will give your child a sense of responsibility in packing their own luggage and it will teach them how to pack in the future. Note, students are expected to adhere to their school dress code on the trip.
Do pack a variety of clothes because East Coast weather is unpredictable. We’ve seen snow in the morning and balmy temperatures and bluebird skies in the afternoon. Depending on the travel season, we recommend bringing a rain coat, a warm jacket or both. Note UGGS and Converse All-Star footwear are not waterproof.
Don’t pack so much clothes that your bag looks like it’s going to explode (because it will). There is a such thing as overpacking. You want them to have some room in their luggage for souvenirs and other items. A good rule of thumb: If you have to sit on the luggage to close it, it’s too full. We recommend rolling clothes or purchasing packing cubes to maximize space.
Don’t bring more luggage than you are allowed to. Trip leaders will always let you know how much luggage your child is allowed to bring. Measure and weigh your child’s luggage before you send them on their way. Airlines are strict about luggage and even the smallest infraction will result in a checked bag and holding up your group.
Do keep all of your personal items in one small are in your hotel room. This practice and referencing your packing list will decrease the likelihood of lost items. Finally, before leaving the hotel room, check all outlets for chargers or any electronics.
Now on to Important Documents
Student under 18 years old are not required to carry or show identification at the airport, however, we recommend bringing a school issued ID card. Travelers 18 years or older are required to show a Government issued ID card, we recommend brining a passport or driver’s license.
These are some of the key packing tips that we have compiled over the years. This list will continue to grow, so be sure to look out for updates, but as long as you keep these important tips in mind, your child is sure to have a great trip!
